The region surrounding Arniston in which your self-catering accommodation
is situated, is known as the Overberg - an expanse of rugged mountains,
vast landscapes, rolling sand dunes and bizarre wind and marine erosion.
Below are just a few of the magnificent attractions found in the region.

Kassiesbaai
Fishing Village
In Arniston itself, the pretty thatched fishermen houses of Kassiesbaai
date back to the early 19th Century. The oldest part of Arniston,
the village has been declared a South African National Monument. The
community numbers just over 100 and is unlikely to grow as you have
to be born there to be able to live there. Visitors, artists and photographers
are welcomed. |

De Mond Nature Reserve
Considered a wetland of National importance, the De Mond Reserve offers
14 kilometres of pristine dunes to discover and explore. Birdwatchers
will discover many rare species. The Reserve is important for the
continued existence of the Damara tern Sterna balaenarum.
This southern African endemic is possibly the rarest resident sea
bird in South Africa. The De Mond reserve is one of the very few confirmed
breeding areas of this species. |

Bontebok National Park
Just 6 kilometres outside of the nearby historical town
of Swellendam, the Bontebok National Park is a game reserve dedicated
to the conservation of the rare and beautiful Bontebok antelope. With
magnificent views across the Breede River, the Park is also home to
the numerous other small buck species. A total of 126 different bird

Cape Agulhas
Technically the southernmost point of Africa, Cape Agulhas is a windswept
and desolate stretch of coastline exemplified by the numerous shipwrecks
dotted along the rugged coast. Officially the point where the Atlantic
and Indian Oceans meet, the waters off Cape Agulhas are known as the
best fishing grounds in South Africa. Built in 1848, the beautiful
old red and white lighthouse is still operational today and is well
worth a visit. |

De Hoop Nature Reserve
The De Hoop Nature Reserve comprises a spectacular stretch of the
coast with huge sand dunes and secluded bays. Mountain zebras and
many antelopes graze on the Fynbos vegetation. This Marine Reserve
is home to the largest nursery of the Southern Right whales on this
coastline and the area known as Koppie Alleen is voted as one of the
best land-based whale watching sites in the world. |
